Josiah Willard Gibbs (1839-1903) -Físico, Químico y Matemático Estadounidense

A principios del Siglo XX, Josiah Willard Gibbs, profesor de Ciencias de la Universidad de Yale, descubrió un principio que fue desde entonces la fundación de una nueva disciplina denominada termodinámica, sobre el cual descansa casi toda la ciencia moderna.

Incorporada después a la física como la fórmula que justifica la fuerza mecánica del calor.

Gibbs probó mediante una ecuación matemática que después sería tan familiar como la de Albert Einstein (E-mc2), que si uno absorbe más energía de la que consume, aumenta de peso.

Y si ingieres menos, bajas de peso, en otras palabras, Gibbs probó sin sombra de duda, que no hay excepciones en cuanto a las dietas. Ironícamente, la energía que desplaza el cuerpo humano cuando quema más calorías de las que procesa, ha sido llamada en su honor “energía libre de Gibbs”.

Hasta el día de hoy, sin embargo, no ha habido evidencia de que pueda existir una alternativa que refute esta ley de la termodinámica.

Esta idea, que bajo de ningún aspecto debe verse como una mala noticia, puede ser liberadora si aprendemos su significado.

En vez de continuar la búsqueda por la panacea que nos haga bajar de peso sin el menor esfuerzo, apliquemos simplemente las leyes de la termodinámica y seguro perderemos los kilos sobrantes que tanto nos preocupan.

Ahora bien, para utilizar con éxito el principio del profesor Gibbs, es necesario aprender antes unos pocos y simples conocimientos básicos.

Hasta el año 1987, ninguna sustancia química conocida por el hombre ha demostrado que, bajo situaciones experimentales controladas, puede aumentar la velocidad a la que el cuerpo humano quema la grasa.

Esta ley incluye, en particular, las vitaminas y la sustancia humana conocida como gonadotropina choriónica Una sustancia creada de la orina de mujeres embarazadas (o de suero de yeguas preñadas), que se inyecta para promover la pérdida de peso.

Una excepción desde el punto de vista teórico es la thyroxina, una hormona producida por la glándula tiroides y que ayuda a regular el metabolismo, creando un ritmo fijo por el cual el cuerpo se guía para quemar calorías. Pensemos en la thyroxina como la palanca de nuestro termostato .

El nivel de esta hormona en la sangre esta determinado por mecanismos muy precisos y controlados de la naturaleza, perfeccionados durante millones de años.

El hipotiroidosmo, término que describe un bajo nivel de esta hormona en la sangre, es un mal muy raro de hallar. Es más, los conceptos que guían su diagnóstico son muy rígidos.

Nuestro consejo es que veas a tu médico o a un endocrinólogo, si sospechas seriamente que padeces de esta condición poco usual. 

Nunca se puede engañar a la Naturaleza.
